High-speed steel drill bit deflects into drywall of the crawlspace?

It sounds like you are hitting something else, possibly a nail, a steel joist connector, a cast iron pipe, or something like that which is causing the bit to deflect. It should not take forever; you should be able to punch through in 10-15 seconds.
