Simple biology question (diffusion? osmosis? active transport?)?

A gardener decided that she would increase the growth rate of her plants by adding large amounts of fertiliser to the soil around them. After two weeks of this all the plants died and when she looked at the roots they were all shrivelled up. The fertiliser contained many minerals. Explain what happened to the plants.
